Generating an animation from a 3D file from an illustration

By Richard in news on December 15, 2010

This question came up this a.m., a client emailed about a project that I had completed earlier this year. The project was a still illustration of a medical device and it has been used in marketing materials over the course of the year. Now, an upcoming trade show calls for something more eye-catching then a still illustration. The client was to animate the image so that attendees can see 1) how it looks from a 360 degree view and 2) how the device operates. This is a perfect opportunity for animation.

So the question was this, can we reuse in any way the still that was created earlier, or do we have to start from scratch to do the animation. The answer is all good news. The original still was created from a 3D model that I originally created. All I need to do is go into archives, pull the file and then begin adding the animated action that is required. Another way to look at it: the original still is basically one frame of an animation. On this project, the animation is straightforward, so the cost moving forward is actually less then the original still. Great news for the client.
